ÆON Substitute Headquarters to be based in Komaki City, Aichi, in Preparation for Tokyo Earthquake.
Quote from Asahi Newspaper dated Saturday July 28, 2012.
The major supermarket chain ÆON (Chiba-based) has decided on a policy to establish substitute headquarters at the ÆON Komaki Store located in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, in the event that its headquarters suffer damage as a result of an earthquake that directly hits the Tokyo area.
Geographically, Komaki is positioned in the central part of Japan and it has therefore been decided that it would be the optimum location from which to issue instructions nationwide, in the event of an emergency situation. There are also plans to incorporate this into their Business Continuity Plan (BCP) before year-end.
The ÆON Headquarters are currently located in Mihama Ward, Chiba City, and house roughly 500 employees, including top managerial staff, as well as administrative department staff working in general affairs. In the event that an earthquake was to directly strike the Tokyo area, it has been envisaged that infrastructure such as communications and roads would suffer major damage and the existing ÆON headquarters would no longer be able to function adequately.
In the case of such a disaster, ÆON executives would be transported by helicopter to Nagoya Airport, which falls under the management of Aichi Prefecture, and is located approximately 3 kilometers southwest of the Komaki Store. Headquarter functions would be relocated to the Komaki Store and from this location, the plan would be to use satellite telephones to issue directives to the affected areas and stores nationwide, thereby facilitating the prompt resumption of business operations.
Training drills are already being conducted.
